Beers, a Unicorn and Whiskey

Right, so this has been an overdue post, and as such would probably take more time to read. Since you might need to read it slowly, I will also type slowly to match your pace.

First off, let me share with you why this post was delayed. It's all due to a magical and wonderful event called ICT, or reservist. The joy and elation I felt during these two weeks can't just be described, it has to be shown.
feel the joy!
Although I should not be the one to be bitching too much since my vocation is but of a measly Storeman. I was also going through make-up training, so the workload was reduced. We did, however, have to support the unit's ATEC, and while most information is classified, I can say that we were needed to collect and dispatch some metal dinghies, which needed 18 pax to carry. Then we had to wait for over 8 hours in a godforsaken area, with no light, no wind but plenty of mosquitoes. Plus I managed to get a bad back and a shoulder sprain since there was only a concrete floor for us to sit on. I hate getting too old for reservist.
nice view though

Totally unrelated, but check out this remix versions of techno with EDM. I should have had this on infinite loop during that boat carrying exercise.

I'm not brave enough to take pictures of classified equipment, thus it's a no no from me. Plus I only have 1 last ICT high key to clear, dun feel like getting charged for posting selfies on social media. I can however, post a selfie from some exercise we had to conduct in the middle of ATEC, cos again, nice scenery.

dun ask me why I'm in civilian, that's also classified

But anyways this ICT is done and dusted, and it's back to the real world. And yes, that means booze.

During the first weekend, I found some time to sample various F&B stuff not available in camp. Most importantly, I got to try out a wide sampling of craft beers at TAP Craft Beer Singapore. This is located at level 1 of the refurbished Capitol, and I promise to head back there more often. Their menu changes periodically, which means if you make a trip down this week, the very next week could be a whole different range altogether. And if your visits are too far apart, you might just miss out on a few complete ranges of their beers!

I think Thursdays are your best bet for heading down. The beers are only $10++ per pint, and they also have free flow Spam Fries! That's luncheon meat cut into wedges, for the uninitiated. We also had the 4 cups sampler set, so we could order more without getting plastered early on. Although, 女人不醉,男人没机会 (lady stays sober, guy's lonely boner), so I was hoping my date was a lot thirstier. Sadly she didn't order more beer.

We did try out their desserts, which were essentially Ice Cream Floats. A little too sweet for my liking, but it's great for those who love sweets and alcohol. A perfect mix of teeth aching goodness. Do head down though, and if you recognise me from my blog, dun be a stranger and come say hi. With a sampler of 4 for me in your hand. Otherwise, just wave from your table.

To clear away the alcohol in the system the next day, first rule is to not have any alcohol. But there was also this Instagram worthy cafe with the most adorable cakes. If you've always had the desire to sink your teeth into a Unicorn (you sick bastard), look no further than Boufe Boutique Cafe.

Located at Phoenix Park, which I think used to be an old Police Camp along Tanglin Rd, it's ideal for drivers since the parking is free and not many places serve beer. Plus they close early so you still have a chance to head towards town for a second round of food.
I have to admit, these are just pure works of art. So damn adorable, we didn't even know where to begin! Look through their menu, and you'll figure out the names of the other 2 cakes. I said the other 2 because the unicorn would be the white one with the horn.

Taste test: I dun like all three.

I wanted to bring my niece, but she would have eaten just the super sweet exterior. All three had a unique filling in the middle, which did not mix well and definitely did not suit my fancy. We struggled to finish all three cakes, and they were small. This is the very definition of "Eh Kwa Buay Gan" (all form no substance). But dun just take my word for it, make your way down to give it a go. Your palate might be stupidly wrong different from mine and you might enjoy it way more than me.

Luckily, one of my many cousins was celebrating his birthday with a light drink at Quaich Whiskey Bar. Took my mind off that overly sweet tea break. Friendly staff, cosy ambience and a lot of Whiskey options, this is a fantastic chillax place to hang out. Plus you can order food from the nearby Jap restaurants, and they'll gladly deliver it right to your seat.

We started the night with his usual purchase.

It's easy on the palate, and can simply be served chilled. they do of course serve proper whiskey glass ice, at least for the first pour. They also provide plenty of water/club soda and ice should you need to add a non-interfering mixer to lighten the taste. Try ordering green tea as a mixer, I dun think I have seen them throw anyone out of the place yet, but hey, if you like to be the first at something.

My cousin also brought along a bottle which I could only describe the taste as heavenly.
FWAH
Of course, corkage will be charged, so dun bother bringing in your cheap whiskeys. This Bunnahabhain had a very pronounced lingering after-taste, and I really wished I took the bottle home. Oh and it was expensive so definitely worth the corkage. If you log in to Quaich Bar's Facebook page, they do have membership details where you are able to get a lot of awesome freebies right from the start, not to mention really preferential rates when you make future purchases.

I did have a small party to attend for a bit, and had to abandon my cousin for a while. He had 4 other friends there so I dun even think he noticed I was gone. As usual, I was also the life of the new party.
look at how fun I can be
Thereafter, I was not asked to join this new group at their second round (maybe due to the fun way I was looking at my phone the whole time), and I rejoined my cousin for all of 10 minutes before he headed home. It was a good night nonetheless, happy birthday Cuz!

Well, this ends my post on the last 2 weeks, I hope me typing slowly helped with the  reading involved. You're welcome.

Fun Fact: This morning a man came by asking for a donation towards the local swimming pool. I gave him a glass of water.

Chasing away those Monday blues

It's Monday once again, or as office workers all over the world describe it: What? Already?!

For the one person who has followed my blog in sequence; yes you, you wonderful stranger, I ended my last post heading into another night of drinks. So while I would like to have materials about such a night, all I can do is recommend the venue I was at. If you like KTV pubs with Chinese / Cantonese songs being belted out all night long, have a go at Room of Mellis located at South Bridge Road. Erm and if you see their link, they have really pretty SG ladies working there too. 😍😍😍

I didn't really take many pictures since I was busy enjoying their Happy Hour beer promo which lasted till 8.30pm. Being the cheapo that I am, I did my utmost best to finish my first tower before HH ended, so that I could get a second one at the same price.
can you blame me?
This of course did not put me in good stead with neither the lovely staff who helped me reserve the table since she doesn't earn commission at HH, nor the owners who think beers should be guzzled when it's at normal price. Of course, they do appreciate me turning up to drink really often, hence I have not been thrown out of the place yet. And as all my friends know, I only head down regularly because of the cheap beer and beautiful decor.
the lion has 2 eyes, just that i was aiming for the lights
Absolutely nothing to do with any of the eye candy working there. Really.

Saturday. I slept. A lot. The end.

Sunday morning I dragged myself awake to play a few games of football with my usual kakis at Bt Batok. I can't give away the location since it's a basketball court and technically we are playing the wrong game. And when I say play, I pretty much strolled around trying to get a tan and perspire to reduce my ever increasing waistline.
old picture, some have since retired
One thing that this picture did not capture is that the place also has sheltered seating. Sheltered seating. So when the weather got too hot, we could hide in the shade and recuperate a little bit. At the peak of our attendance, we had the option to play 'Winner rests'. So it motivates you to win the game and take a breather. Losing gets you extra playing time in scorching heat, we all tried our best to win.

However, only 6 of us turned up, and one was a 60 year old uncle (former professional player no less) but there was only so much running we could do. Bear in mind this was the first game after Christmas 2016 for a few of us. Me, I meant me. So the game ended early and I had the chance to beat the queue for the lunch of my choice.

A very happy shout out to Soi19 Thai Wanton Mee! Thanks for opening a branch at Jurong East Blk 130, just beside the CPF building. The queue thankfully isn't as long as the one at AMK, so my tired, weakened and shaking legs didn't have to hold out for too long.
apologies for the tops of heads, my arms were tired too
Maybe because it was before 12pm, I managed to grab a bowl of noodles (Large for $5), a separate order of wanton soup ($3.50), and still have ample seats to choose from. So I had ample space to do what all foodies do, Instagram my meal. (Blatant advertising coming right up)

erm, be my follower? please please
Then something thoroughly amused me. I received this comment from another user.

soccer or the noodles?
I mean I know my soccer session was breath-taking, not due to my skills but cos I was really out of breath. But to describe this bowl of wanton noodles as breathtaking, National Geographic, sign me up. I mean come on la, simi sai. You want more followers also at least comment in context leh. Wah biang.

So that's pretty much Sunday cos thereafter I was comatose until this morning. And while I was struggling to not curse and swear on the MRT, I came across a few memes by The Trollercoaster that made my morning commute a lot better.
To conclude, I hope your weekend was a lot more eventful than mine, and your Monday a bit better after reading my ramblings.

Two day hangover, need TGIF beer to resolve it

So since it's a Friday, let's make this a bit yummy looking. I went for a work appointment at Buona Vista, and although that is actually pretty near home, it's even nearer to Holland Village. And as I'm typing this I can actually sense my liver giving me the middle finger and whispering a lot of hokkien to me. None are printable.
I needed to meet my Financial Advisor to better improve my medical coverage, and managed to find a place serving 2 pints of beer at $12++. 2 PINTS!!! Do head down to Drinks & Co., the beers are light, they have a fantastic selection of wines and whiskeys, and the staff are incredibly friendly.
think my first sip was a bit much
I think after work, and boring discussions, I need a beer. Or maybe 10. More if you're paying. And I'm not sure is it because I drank a bit too quickly, but I started seeing weird shit along the street.
To be sure that I wasn't hallucinating, I took a few photos from my phone. I wanted to join in and get my photos taken too, but I'll just keep letting the girls fall on me, preferably boobs face down. It doesn't beat the NUDE COUPLE walking down the street all those years back, but still somewhat entertaining. Thank you tight yoga clothes. From the bottom of my heart.

Needless to say, I had a bit of a hangover the next day, and as such, had to go have a meal for lunch where I needed to totally sweat it out of my system. I dun think it's a standard hangover cure, but it works for me so I'll stick to it.

So I know of this little hidden treasure at Enggor St called Korean BBQ World. At night it turns into a very worthwhile Korean BBQ place, but during weekday lunch, ALL dishes are only $10 nett.
only $10 nett! for all these!

Now, for that $10, you get free flow of the 6 side dishes, a very generous portion of the main dish, be it soup overflowing with ingredients, a bulgogi with 3 times the meat you get at food courts or a seemingly endless bowl of bibimbap. I've brought many massive eaters here, and we seldom need to refill the side dishes. Even the soju costs $13 nett, not that I ever ordered during lunch. Cos no drinking during office hours.

Being a little bit older nowadays, I like to find cheap bargains for food and beverages. And lucky for me, the firm I'm with regularly has lunch catered in. Which means if there are leftovers, the staff gets to eat. A mini buffet. For free.
today's lunch
Now I know what you might be thinking, there is not much veggies on the plate. But they were serving broccoli, so you really can't blame me. It's freaking broccoli. Bleh. I also had nasi lemak in the morning, with 2 big pieces of ngor hiong, but no pics cos I was so damn hungry. Trust me, it tasted great. And now I'm fat from the carbs overload.

So since it's a Friday, I might need to go have a light drink to end the week. And yes, I just did say I'm feeling fat, so to help my waistline, I shall not eat any solid foods. After all, I'll already be just ordering a tower of liquid carbs. Weee.

In conclusion, I'll be hungover till Sunday. That's a 4 day hangover.

To begin...

Hi all,

This is my first ever foray into blogging, and therefore is the first ever post. As I am totally unfamiliar with this, I do assume that this would be:
  1. unread by anyone
  2. dismissed by the handful who came across it as rubbish
Of course I do make no apologies for this since my main aim is to brush up on my writing skills, which will thereafter lead to me being able to convert my ramblings into a coherent structure, resulting in a novel of sorts. I will improve over time, I think.

First of, I need to share what I aim the content would be, which is current affairs. I hardly catch up on any news, so this would be a good platform to instill some fresh daily habits.

Secondly, this will not have the same sort of short forms, abbreviations or intentional misspellings as other popular SG blogs (EDMW springs to mind), as I once read a sentence in some thread and I left needing Panadol Extra and a couple of pints of ice cold lager. Although, there will be the odd sprinkling of Hokkien and Mandarin, I am a HDB heartlander after all, and at times those might make more sense.

Finally, I thank those who made it this far, since I have yet to add in my brand of lame humour in this post.

So for those, I will add in this to brighten your day.

Fun Fact: A bus stop is named as such, because buses stop there.
